In the winter, what’s better 00 to come home and find that a hot, hearty dinner has magically cooked while you were out.
Slow cookers aren’t expensive to buy and are very economical and energy-efficient
use. They work extremely well with cheaper cuts of meat or meat on the bone, as chicken thighs, pork shoulder or beef ribs. Slow cooking makes the meat become soft so that it will fall off the bone and melt in your mouth.
A slow-cooked dish needs minimal preparation. Switch the pot
and let it warm up while you prepare your ingredients. Chop and fry the onions and garlic. Roll the meat in flour and brown it in the frying pan to seal in the flavour. Peel and chop the rest of the vegetables – hard vegetables potatoes and root vegetables work particularly well in the slow cooker, but you can use almost sort of vegetables you like. Then simply put it into the ceramic pot with some liquid, for example, stock, wine or beer or you can add tin of tomatoes. Add your herbs or spices. Put the glass lid on and leave it. You need to do anything – just come home six to eight hours later, and your dinner will be bubbling gently in the pot, ready to eat. You can even add pasta or dumplings during the last hour for the ultimate in one pot cooking.

My father was posted to Patna. On the first Sunday there, my brother and I decided to do a little exploring on our bikes. It was still very early morning, and only a few people were around. The roads were good, and the trees lining them were shady. After cycling for about half an hour, my brother got bored and said, “Come on, I will race you to that corner.

This was not the first time we had raced. I really wanted to win this time. I pedalled as fast as I could.
The trees on either side of the road became one green wall. My hair blew behind me, and I was out of breath. Soon, I caught up with my brother, and then gradually, I moved ahead. I started shouting loudly with joy, but the smile froze on my lips.

I braked hard, and the cycle stopped suddenly, but I could not stop the movement of my own body.
The cow, frightened by this sudden attack, stood up and started running. I grabbed her as she sprinted up the road and round the corner. As we turned, I spotted two rows of Cavalry officers sitting on their wonderful horses approaching us.
The horses panicked and ran in all directions. The cow managed to fall, and I landed on the soft earth.
I saw my brother approaching with my bike behind him, coming up to me with a wide smile on his face.
“You looked great on top of that cow,” he said and started laughing.
“Are you all right?” “Of course I am,” I said and got up. Nothing on earth would have made me admit to him how frightened and shaken I was.

Part 2: The History of Afternoon Tea (6 points)

(A)

Afternoon tea, the typical English custom, is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. It’s the seventh Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Russell, who we have to thank for the invention of afternoon tea sometime around 1840. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock (thanks to the spread of gas lighting in England) thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner.

(B)

The Duchess would become hungry around five o’clock in the afternoon. She requested that some tea, bread and butter and cake was brought to her room in the late afternoon. With that one request, an afternoon ritual was born, and she began inviting friends to join her. The fashionable custom soon spread across Britain.

(C)

This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880s, upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea, which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock. Nowadays, however, afternoon tea is more casual, just a biscuit and a mug of tea, usually produced using a teabag.

(D)

By the Victorian era (1837–1901), tea drinking had become an English tradition. Tea drinking for the rich came with various types of equipment – delicate porcelain teacups, bowls and saucers, decorative teapots, beautiful table linen and personalised tea blends. The afternoon tea table was a place to express their identity, interests and taste.

(E)

Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of tasty sandwiches and cakes, called scones, served with cream and jam. There are two types of people in the world: those who put milk in first and those who begin with the tea and add milk second. To experience the best of the afternoon tea tradition, go on a trip to one of London’s finest hotels or visit a tearoom.

48There are different opinions about whether the milk or the tea is put in the cup first.
