Two horses 00. this pair of jeans in different directions – but they do not tear. What started out as work trousers eventually became a casual classic: Levi’s jeans.
Levi Strauss, a young immigrant from Germany, arrived in San Francisco in 1850
California was in the middle of the Gold Rush. Thousands of men
to dig for gold and Levi Strauss wanted to sell canvas to them. Canvas is a heavy material and so Levi Strauss thought the miners could use it for tents.
One day Strauss heard a miner
that he couldn’t find clothes strong enough for the work he was doing. Strauss got an idea and quickly took some of his canvas and made it into trousers. Later, he wanted to
his jeans and bought a fabric that was softer than canvas but just
strong. This material came from Nimes, a city in France, and was called serge de Nimes. The miners liked this material and called it ‘denim’ (from de Nimes). However, denim had
colour. Because of this, the denim trousers did not look very interesting and got dirty
. To solve this problem, Strauss dyed the denim blue.
One of Strauss’s customers, Jacob Davis, found a way of making trousers
longer by putting metal at the corners of pockets. Cut from nine-ounce denim, these trousers had a straight leg, five pockets. In 1934, Levi’s produced the first jeans for women.
During World War II, the US government decided that Levi’s were important to the war effort, and production was controlled to
the prices low. In 2020, Americans voted Levi’s classic 501s the most iconic fashion
of all time.

Part 2: Could You Live on Mars? (10 points)

V nasledujúcom texte sú na miestach 31 – 40 vynechané slová. Dopĺňajte len také slová, ktoré majú gramatickú funkciu. Doplňte vždy iba jedno slovo.

Príklad: 00 – as

Svoje odpovede napíšte na odpoveďový hárok označený piktogramom "pero".

Mars, also known 00 the Red Planet because of the rust-coloured iron minerals in its ground and atmosphere, is a cold, dry and uninviting place. Temperatures there can drop to around −150°C, there very little water and the atmosphere, is 96 per cent carbon dioxide, is too thin block ultraviolet radiation from space.
So far, six robotic Mars rovers
landed on the planet to search for signs of life. They’ve found evidence of ancient magma, a river delta, a lake and organic molecules preserved in rocks and dust. seems certain is that Mars was once much wetter than it is now. Nowadays, Mars has much less water than Earth. The water that’s been discovered on the planet is in the form of ice at the planet’s north and south poles or in the form of saltwater, trapped under the ice at the planet’s south pole.
 However, difficult conditions on Mars
stopped Elon Musk from making plans to create a Martian city, supported by solar-powered farms. Musk sees the project as ‘a futuristic Noah’s ark’ that would involve sending people and animals to live on Mars. In reality, life on Mars would involve serious challenges. Apart from the low temperatures, lack of water, radiation and toxic soil, the planet has a dust storm season, during which fine dust particles block the sunlight months. Existence would mean having live in unnatural areas like ecosystems where people would shut in and protected from the difficult conditions outside.

Section III - READING (20 points)

Táto časť testu sa skladá z troch ukážok. Jej vypracovaniu by ste mali venovať približne 45 minút. Pri každom texte si všímajte piktogram, aby ste vedeli, ktorý odpoveďový hárok máte použiť.

Part 1: Cats Are Loving Pets Too (7 points)

If you get a cat as a baby kitten, you have the chance to shape its personality. It is highly recommended that you hold it a lot (even if it asks to get down) and kiss it frequently. Make sure your kitten is exposed to many people, including children and other pets in your home.
If small children handle the kitten, it is a good idea to look after them together and make certain the children do it properly. However, do not let them be too rough with the kitten.
In this case, do your best to let the mother get to know you first before you handle her baby.
Then she will not feel alone. When your new kitten is in your home, play with it often and be prepared to have it on the couch or in bed with you.
It will climb up on your sofa or bed.
There is also an option for you to adopt a mature cat from your nearest animal shelter.
You will also avoid all the trouble a kitten tends to get into as it is growing up. At the animal shelter, you can find a staff member to assist you in finding a mature cat that is friendly and warm-hearted.
Give it much love, and you will get it back ten-fold. It may climb up on the couch or bed with you as well.
You do not want that to happen.

Part 2: Ancient Egypt Women’s Roles (6 points)

(A)

In general, men and women had different roles in the society of Ancient Egypt. However, unlike in many ancient civilizations, women were considered men’s equals under the law. Like men, women could run businesses, borrow money, and own property. Although women had fewer opportunities than men, they had the same legal rights. In some cases, this allowed a woman to rise in power to become pharaoh.

(B)

Because women did not become clerks or work in the government, they did not learn how to read or write. They were taught homemaking skills and how to manage a household by their mother. Girls in Ancient Egypt got married very young, usually around the age of twelve or thirteen. The Egyptians did not have big marriage ceremonies; the two families arranged most marriages.

(C)

Women typically worked around the home. They prepared food, cooked meals, cleaned the house, made clothing, and cared for the children. Poor women would help their husbands work the fields. Richer women would manage the servants or perhaps run their businesses. They also spent their time managing the servants and planning large banquets.

(D)

Only women from important and high-ranking families were allowed to become priestesses. Working in a temple was considered an honour. There were many powerful women goddesses in the Egyptian religion, including Isis (the mother goddess) and Nut (goddess of the sky). Women as priestesses regularly played important roles in religious festivals.

(E)

Not all women worked in the family home or fit in the typical roles of women. In Ancient Egyptian society, women in ancient Egypt were ahead of their time. Women owned businesses making and selling products such as cosmetics, perfume, or clothing. Some women worked as entertainers in the courts as musicians or dancers.
